How to Buy Niagara Falls Boat Tour Tickets

Voucher or timed slot, where to pay, what happens if you lose the ticket, and how to avoid overpaying a reseller.

Visitors on the walkway beside the Horseshoe Falls
Short answerBuy directly from the operator. Maid of the Mist sells emailed vouchers online and tickets at its booth; vouchers are not timed, and boarding is first come. Niagara City Cruises sells timed slots online or at its Ticket Plaza, online by Visa or Mastercard only. Resellers add risk and mark-ups, so verify any seller before you pay.

Buying a boat ticket is simple if you know which of the two models you are dealing with. One side sells a voucher that is not tied to a time. The other sells a timed slot. Mixing them up is the most common source of confusion. This page explains both, how to pay, what to do if something goes wrong, and how to spot a seller you should not trust. For fares see the 2026 price page.

How buying Maid of the Mist works

The operator's FAQ and schedule page describe the flow. You can buy online and receive a voucher by email. The voucher is valid on any day of the 2026 season, but it is not a boarding ticket. At the booth you exchange it for one. You can also skip the website and buy at the booth on the day; those tickets are valid only on the day you buy them.

Because there is no time slot, the first-come rule applies to everyone. The company says departures are scheduled about every 15 minutes through the day, and the ticket office opens 30 minutes before the first departure and closes 15 minutes before the last. Ticket prices include the elevator that takes you down to the landing at the base of the gorge. You also get access to the observation deck over the gorge, and the Observation Tower elevator itself needs no boat ticket for general sightseeing.

At the booth, the State Park page lists cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express, and no personal cheques. The pages we read do not list the cards accepted online, so check at checkout.

A practical consequence: an online voucher saves you the decision about when to come, not any waiting at the landing. The sources do not say whether voucher holders have a separate exchange line. If you hold a voucher, plan time at the booth as well as the boarding queue. For more on lines, see wait times.

How buying Niagara City Cruises works

The operator's ticket page for Voyage to the Falls says tickets are required in advance and that every rider, including infants, needs a ticket. On the FAQ page you choose a date and slot, and you arrive just before or within it. The FAQ also says that during the peak period, from June to Labour Day, departure may not take place within the slot because of lineups at the Lower Landing. In plain terms, a timed ticket gets you in the queue for your slot, not a guaranteed sailing at that minute.

You can also buy at the Ticket Plaza on Niagara Parkway, subject to availability. Third-party listings give plaza hours of 8:30 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Thursday and 8:30 am to 9:00 pm Friday to Sunday, but that listing is undated and not from the operator, so verify before relying on it.

Payment methods

Per the FAQ, online payment accepts Visa and Mastercard only. At the Ticket Plaza you can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Interac or debit, and by Canadian or US cash. American Express, Discover and digital wallets are not listed for either channel, so do not assume them. The operator does not sell or accept gift cards.

Mobile tickets and lost tickets

Mobile tickets are scannable and you do not need to print them. If a ticket goes missing, bring your booking confirmation number to the Ticket Plaza, so keep the confirmation email handy.

Ticket Assurance

Niagara City Cruises sells an optional Ticket Assurance product that allows you to reschedule or cancel up to 2 hours before departure, less its own non-refundable cost. It is not available on holiday, specialty or partnership cruises. The full rules are on our cancellation and refund policy page.

What to do at peak times

The operator names the busy period on its ticket page: mid-June to Labour Day, holiday weekends, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Maid of the Mist publishes no equivalent statement but has a Wait Times Trends & Insights tool on its website. Use the guidance below, and remember that neither operator publishes official wait statistics.

  • Canada, peak season: book a timed slot online ahead, and arrive well before it. Departure within the slot is not promised.
  • Canada, off-peak: you can still book online, which fixes your price and your slot. The Ticket Plaza sells tickets too, subject to availability.
  • US, any time: there is nothing to reserve, so the only lever is the hour you arrive. Check the operator's wait tool for the day you plan to come.
  • Both: go early in the day and check the closing time for your date on our open-today checker.
  • Both: do not buy two sets of tickets 'just in case'. Maid of the Mist vouchers are flexible by day; Canadian tickets are not flexible within 48 hours unless you bought Ticket Assurance.

A step-by-step buying checklist

Canadian side

  1. Open the operator's own site and choose Voyage to the Falls, or the Falls Fireworks Cruise on select evenings.
  2. Pick the date and slot. If it is June to Labour Day or a holiday weekend, favour an early slot and arrive early.
  3. Add Ticket Assurance only if your plans could change; it is not available on holiday, specialty or partnership cruises.
  4. Check the total: the fare plus 13% HST. Pay with Visa or Mastercard.
  5. Save the mobile ticket and confirmation number. Enter through the Main Ticket Plaza at 5920 Niagara Parkway and go down to the Lower Landing.

American side

  1. Buy a voucher on the operator's site, or go to the booth at street level by the Observation Tower and pay there.
  2. If you have a voucher, exchange it for a boarding ticket at the booth.
  3. Take the elevator, which is included, to the landing, and join the first-come queue.
  4. If you buy in person, use the ticket the same day; it is not valid for later dates.

Parking and getting there affect timing too. See boat tour parking and getting to Niagara Falls.

Resellers, mark-ups and the evidence

Many websites sell Niagara boat tickets or tours that include them. Some are legitimate tour companies selling a package. Others only resell, and one trouble spot is price. Reviewers on a third-party seller's Trustpilot page describe paying around US$70 online for a ticket they say cost about US$47 at the window, and one describes a booking the boat company could not find. We read those reviews as anecdotes. They are individual accounts, we could not verify them, and one seller does not describe the whole market. They are reason enough to check, not proof of how common the problem is.

The official position is clearer. Maid of the Mist says it does not endorse third-party tour companies or online resellers, and that only official tickets and vouchers are accepted. Niagara City Cruises sells directly and says nothing in the pages we read about reseller bookings. Niagara Parks and Niagara Falls Tourism list the cruise, and Niagara Falls Tourism also sells a "First on the Boat" bundle with Journey Behind the Falls that is operated by a third party; we have not verified how that bundle is fulfilled.

A lower price from a reseller does not mean a better deal, and a higher one is not a premium product. Many sold-by-others tickets are the same boat and the same 20 minutes.

How to verify an official seller

  • Official domains: maidofthemist.com for the US boat and niagaracitycruises.com for the Canadian boat. The older cityexperiences.com Niagara pages redirect to the operator.
  • Read the web address letter by letter. Look-alike domains and extra words ('official', 'tickets', a city name) are a warning.
  • Look for the operator's own terms: the Canadian 48-hour rule, Ticket Assurance and payment methods should match the operator's FAQ.
  • Check the price against the fares on our price page. A listing far above them for the boat alone needs an explanation.
  • Check the currency and tax. A C$ price without HST and a US$ price for the Canadian boat each need a second look.
  • Pay by credit card, not a transfer, so you keep chargeback rights. Keep the confirmation email.
  • Check contact details on the operator's own site if unsure, and compare any number a seller gives you with it.

Tickets for the day tour, and where the boat fits

Disclosure: this site also promotes our Toronto day tour, so weigh this section accordingly. Searchers who type "tickets" often want a day trip, not a single boat ticket. The shared tour runs daily all year, at C$89.99 per adult with child and senior fares of C$79.99, pickup in downtown Toronto at 8:30 am and drop-off around 5:30 pm, traffic permitting. Tax treatment is not stated on the price listing.

The boat is an optional add-on, not part of the base price. The Niagara City Cruises add-on is listed at C$47.95 for adults and C$27.95 for children, adding about an hour. The add-on is seasonal, so we confirm availability for your date. The child add-on price equals the lower of the two Niagara child fares discussed on the price page, so confirm the child price when you book.

Our Toronto day tour can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour. For anything else, such as weather or the boat add-on, use the form on the booking page or the contact page. See the day tours overview and the Toronto to Niagara Falls day tour for details.

Ticket scam and trap checklist

  • A seller you cannot identify. No company name, address or phone, or only a chat widget.
  • Pressure language such as 'only 2 left' on a product with no time slot (Maid of the Mist has none).
  • A price that includes 'VIP' or 'skip the line' for the boat. We found no official VIP or priority boarding product on the Canadian operator's site, and Maid of the Mist boards first come.
  • Tickets 'valid for both boats'. The boats are on opposite sides of an international border.
  • A voucher or ticket for a date the operator is not running. Maid of the Mist closes Nov 8, 2026, and Canadian dates after the season are unpublished.
  • An offer to pay by gift card or wire. Niagara City Cruises does not sell gift cards.
  • Refund terms you cannot read before paying.

What the sources do not say

  • Whether Maid of the Mist's online checkout takes American Express or Discover. The booth does.
  • Whether voucher holders at Maid of the Mist use a separate exchange line.
  • Whether the Canadian ticket price at the plaza differs from online. No walk-up versus online difference was found.
  • The operator-confirmed Ticket Plaza hours and a recommended check-in time for Niagara City Cruises.
  • Whether a Maid of the Mist 2026 voucher carries into 2027. It is described as valid during the 2026 season only.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I buy Maid of the Mist tickets?

Buy online at maidofthemist.com for an emailed voucher, or at the ticket booths at street level by the Observation Tower in Niagara Falls State Park. The operator says it does not endorse third-party resellers and accepts only official tickets and vouchers.

Does a Maid of the Mist online ticket reserve a time?

No. The online ticket is an emailed voucher valid any day of the 2026 season. You exchange it for a boarding ticket at the booth, and boarding is first come, first served for everyone, online buyers included. There are no date or time reservations.

Do I need to book Niagara City Cruises in advance?

The operator's ticket page says tickets are required in advance, and its FAQ describes timed slots. It also says tickets can be bought at the Ticket Plaza on Niagara Parkway, subject to availability. Booking online before a weekend or holiday is the safer choice.

What payment methods do the boats accept?

Niagara City Cruises takes Visa and Mastercard only online. At the Ticket Plaza it adds Interac debit and Canadian or US cash. Maid of the Mist's booth takes cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express, but not personal cheques, according to the State Park page.

What if I lose my Niagara City Cruises ticket?

The operator's FAQ says to bring your booking confirmation number to the Ticket Plaza. Tickets are mobile and scannable, so you do not need to print anything. Keep the confirmation email handy.

Is it safe to buy boat tickets from a reseller?

It can be, but you take on risk. Both operators sell directly, and Maid of the Mist says it does not endorse resellers. Visitor reviews of one seller report mark-ups and bookings the boat company could not find. Those are anecdotes, so verify any seller before paying.

Are day tour tickets the same as boat tickets?

No. Our Toronto day tour is a coach tour, and the boat ride is an optional paid add-on of C$47.95 for adults. You pay for the day tour and add the cruise when you book. Confirm the terms through the contact form before booking.

What should I do at peak times?

On the Canadian side, book a slot online and arrive early, because the operator says departures may not leave within the slot from mid-June to Labour Day. On the American side, arrive before the crowds, since boarding is first come. Neither operator publishes wait statistics.
