Tolls and bridge rules checked against the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission and the Peace Bridge on October 17, 2026. Border rules change, so use the official links below.
This is a trip-planning guide, not legal or immigration advice. Border rules depend on your citizenship, your documents, your vehicle and your travel history, and they change. We give the facts we could verify from official sources, flag the ones we could not, and link to the agencies that decide.
The two Niagara Falls boat tours sit on opposite sides of the border. Niagara City Cruises boards in Ontario, Canada, and Maid of the Mist boards in New York, USA. If you want both, or want to see the falls from both countries, you will cross. The Canada vs USA guide covers whether that is worth it.
Do you need a passport to board each boat?
Maid of the Mist's FAQ says there is no passport or ID required to board, because the tour departs from and returns to the American side. That is a statement about the boat. It does not remove the border between you and the boat. If you are in Canada, you must cross into the United States to reach it, and the border officer will ask for your documents.
The reverse is similar. Niagara City Cruises boards at the Lower Landing in Niagara Falls, Ontario, entered via the Main Ticket Plaza at 5920 Niagara Parkway. The operator's pages we read do not describe an ID check at boarding, and the boarding area is under 1 km from Rainbow Bridge. Once you are legally in Canada, getting on the boat is a matter of having a ticket. Niagara City Cruises says guests and items may be screened.
One curiosity: Niagara Parks says the Whirlpool Aero Car crosses the Canada-US border four times and requires no passport.
Documents by traveller type
We can state only what the official sources support. The sections below separate what we verified from what we did not.
US citizens entering Canada by land
CBSA recommends a passport. According to a search-result summary of CBSA and IRCC wording, other documents showing name, date of birth and citizenship can be presented for land entry, such as a birth certificate, a citizenship certificate, an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS card. We could not load the full page to confirm that list. A passport is mandatory by air. Check the CBSA page below before you rely on anything other than a passport.
Returning to the US by land (US citizens)
CBP says citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, and the same applies to children under 19 who travel with a school, religious or other youth group. This is from CBP's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page. The adult list (passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence, NEXUS) is common knowledge, but we could not re-verify it on a CBP page, so confirm it at cbp.gov. For children's tickets and the family angle, read the family guide.
Visitors who are not US citizens or Canadian citizens
Canada's eTA is for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada. It is not required for US citizens, and it is not required when you arrive by land, sea or rail, though a valid passport is still required. US permanent residents have been exempt from the eTA since April 26, 2022. Visa-required nationalities still need a visitor visa. We did not verify the nationality lists, and we do not know the current rules for non-US, non-Canadian travellers entering the US from Canada, so check both agencies.
Canadian citizens entering the US
We could not verify the current CBP requirements for Canadian citizens. Use the CBP site below.
Rainbow Bridge: the main crossing for visitors
Rainbow Bridge links the two Niagara Falls and is the crossing most visitors use. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission publishes the toll. The passenger-car toll rose to US$6.00 or CAD $8.50 on May 1, 2025.
| Who | Toll | Direction collected |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger car | US$6.00 or CAD $8.50 (E-ZPass US$6.00) | One way, entering Canada. Nothing is charged returning to the US |
| Pedestrian | US$1.00 (US cash) or CAD $1.25 (Canadian cash, mixed cash or tap) | Going into the US, collected on the Canadian side |
| Bicycle | US$1.00 | Per the Bridge Commission; direction not confirmed in our sources |
The posted car toll implies an exchange rate of about 1.42 Canadian dollars to one US dollar (8.50 divided by 6.00); that is a posted ratio, not a market rate. Pennies are not accepted from August 1, 2026. Lewiston-Queenston toll booth is in Canada. No trucks or commercial vehicles use Rainbow Bridge. Compare the toll with other trip costs in our cost calculator.
Hours and the pedestrian-lane caveat
CBP's feed lists Rainbow Bridge as open 24 hours a day. However, on the evening of October 17, 2026 the same feed showed pedestrian lanes closed. A May 2026 snapshot also showed pedestrian lanes closed. Treat "pedestrians 24 hours" as not guaranteed. We could not find CBSA pedestrian hours. Before you walk, check the Bridge Commission traffic page or call. Have a backup plan, such as a taxi or a rideshare, if the pedestrian lanes are closed.
How to cross on foot between the two Niagara Falls
- Pedestrians are permitted on the Rainbow Bridge walkway. They are not permitted on the Lewiston-Queenston or Whirlpool Rapids bridges.
- Walking to the US: you pay the pedestrian toll (US$1.00 or CAD $1.25) on the Canadian side, then go through US inspection.
- Walking to Canada: no toll is collected on the way into Canada, then go through Canadian inspection.
- Carry the documents for your citizenship, and for each child. The Bridge Commission says to carry ID for yourself and minors.
- The Canadian boat dock is under 1 km from Rainbow Bridge. Parking at the Rainbow Bridge lot ($12 an hour, 4348 Hiram St) is about a 10 minute walk to Niagara City Cruises.
- On the US side, the state park's parking page suggests 10 Rainbow Blvd as a GPS address when the park lots are full.
Our sources do not give a walking time between the two sides, a distance from the US inspection point to the Maid of the Mist landing, or a taxi price. Plan your own route using a map, and allow time for inspection. See the parking guide for where to leave a car on either side.
Peace Bridge (Buffalo to Fort Erie)
The Peace Bridge between Buffalo and Fort Erie is the second main crossing in the area. Tolls are collected Canada-bound only. A car pays US$4.00 with E-ZPass, or US$8.00 or CAD $11.00 by card; the bridge is cashless. Pedestrians and cyclists cross toll free at any time. The bridge asks them to carry a passport or ID and use the south sidewalk. The bridge is at Buffalo and Fort Erie, not at the falls, so it suits a drive-and-park plan better than a walk to the boat. See getting to Niagara Falls for drive times.
Whirlpool Rapids Bridge and NEXUS
The Bridge Commission lists the dedicated NEXUS-only crossing as the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, with Global Entry permitted US-bound only. It is not for everyone. A CBP Rainbow Bridge feed snapshot showed NEXUS lanes as N/A and a "Ready Lane" Monday to Thursday, 3 to 7 pm. A search excerpt that claimed a Rainbow Bridge NEXUS lane from 8 am to 8 pm contradicts this, and we treated the Commission as authoritative. Verify the Whirlpool Rapids hours before relying on it. Pedestrians cannot use that bridge.
Live border wait times
Wait times change by the minute. On the evening of October 17, 2026, CBP's feed showed 6 minutes at Rainbow Bridge, and the CBSA page showed 5 minutes for travellers at 6:20 pm EDT. That is a snapshot, not a pattern. These tools are free and official.
- CBP border wait times (US-bound travellers)
- CBSA border wait times (Canada-bound travellers)
- Niagara Falls Bridge Commission traffic conditions
- Peace Bridge live status
Our sources contain no month-by-month border wait statistics, so we cannot tell you which hours are worst. Check the live tools on the day, and add margin for holiday weekends.
Planning a day with both boats
Riding both boats in one day means one crossing each way and two different sets of rules. Here is what the sources let us say.
- Maid of the Mist online vouchers are valid any day of the 2026 season and must be exchanged for a boarding ticket at the booth. There are no date or time reservations, so you cannot lock in a time before you cross.
- Niagara City Cruises sells timed tickets: you choose a date and slot, and the operator says peak lineups can delay departure beyond your slot. Late arrival is not compensated.
- Maid of the Mist hours in 2026 range from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm in midsummer down to 9:00 am to 4:00 pm from November 1. Niagara City Cruises sails every 30 minutes from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, with extended hours from May 15 that are not published. Crossing eats into the shorter autumn days.
- For a family of four on foot, the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian toll would be CAD $5.00 in total (4 x CAD $1.25), collected going into the US, if every person pays. Our source does not say whether children are exempt. Walking into Canada has no toll.
- Leave time for inspection at each crossing. We have no published inspection-time statistic, so use the live wait tools.
Because the two operators do not coordinate, the simplest plan is one boat per day, or two boats on two days. If you want both in one day, read the operator comparison first and consider whether one boat is enough; visitor sources describe the rides as near-identical.
Decision table
| If you are... | Do this | Check |
|---|---|---|
| On the Canadian side and want only Niagara City Cruises | No border crossing. Stay in Canada. | Canadian entry rules if you arrived from abroad |
| On the US side and want only Maid of the Mist | No passport needed to board; you are already in the US. | US entry rules if you arrived from abroad |
| Staying in Canada and want Maid of the Mist | Cross at Rainbow Bridge by car or on foot. You will go through US inspection. | CBP page; pedestrian-lane status; wait times |
| Staying in the US and want Niagara City Cruises | Cross at Rainbow Bridge. The car toll is collected entering Canada. | CBSA page; wait times; bring passports |
| A US citizen with children under 16 | Birth certificate or other proof of citizenship is enough for children returning to the US by land, per CBP. | CBP page; CBSA rules for entering Canada |
| A visa-exempt visitor flying into Canada | An eTA is required if flying; not required when arriving by land. Bring a valid passport. | IRCC eTA page |
| A visa-required national | You need a visitor visa for Canada. Rules for the US were not verified. | IRCC and CBP |
| A NEXUS holder | Whirlpool Rapids is the NEXUS-only crossing; confirm hours. | Bridge Commission |
| Walking and the pedestrian lanes are closed | Cross by vehicle instead, or reschedule. | Bridge Commission traffic page |
What to carry when you cross
This checklist is our suggestion, built from the document facts above. It is not an official list.
- Passports for everyone able to have one, since CBSA recommends a passport for entering Canada.
- For US citizen children under 16: a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship is what CBP names for land return. A passport is simpler if you have one.
- Any visa or proof of status your nationality requires. Check IRCC for Canada and CBP for the US.
- Small cash in the right currency: US$1.00 or CAD $1.25 per pedestrian toll (Canadian cash, mixed cash or tap are accepted; pennies are not accepted from August 1, 2026).
- Your tickets. Maid of the Mist online vouchers must be exchanged at the booth, so bring the email.
- A phone with the live wait-time pages saved, and a plan B if the pedestrian lanes are closed.
Rules change: use the official pages
Border rules are set by governments, not by us. These are the official starting points, all checked on October 17, 2026.
- CBSA: travel documents for entering Canada
- CBP: travel information for entering the US
- CBP: Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (children under 16)
- Niagara Falls Bridge Commission: pedestrian crossing
- Niagara Falls Bridge Commission: tolls
If you do not want to handle the border yourself, a guided tour can. Our day tours page explains how a shared tour from Toronto handles the Canadian side; it does not cross into the US.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a passport for Maid of the Mist?
Not to board. The Maid of the Mist FAQ says no passport or ID is required, because the tour leaves from and returns to the American side. But if you are in Canada, you need the right documents to cross into the US first. Carry a passport and check CBP.
Do I need a passport for Niagara City Cruises?
The boat boards on the Canadian side, and the operator pages we read do not describe an ID check at boarding. If you are coming from the US, you must cross into Canada first, and CBSA recommends a passport for US citizens entering by land. Check the CBSA page.
How much is the Rainbow Bridge toll?
A passenger car pays US$6.00 or CAD $8.50, collected one way when entering Canada, with nothing charged returning to the US. Pedestrians pay US$1.00 or CAD $1.25 going into the US, collected on the Canadian side. Pennies are not accepted from August 1, 2026.
Can I walk across between the two Niagara Falls?
Yes, pedestrians are permitted on the Rainbow Bridge walkway, but not on Lewiston-Queenston or Whirlpool Rapids bridges. On the evening of October 17, 2026, CBP's feed showed pedestrian lanes closed even though the bridge is listed open 24 hours, so confirm before you walk.
Is the Peace Bridge free to cross?
For pedestrians and cyclists, yes, at any time, using the south sidewalk with a passport or ID. Cars pay a Canada-bound toll only: US$4.00 with E-ZPass, or US$8.00 or CAD $11.00 by card. The bridge is cashless, so do not plan to pay a car toll in cash. The pedestrian crossing is free and open at any time per the bridge.
What do children need to cross the border?
CBP says US citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship for land return, and under 19 if with a school, religious or other youth group. Entering Canada and other nationalities were not verified, so check CBSA and CBP.
Do I need an eTA to visit Niagara Falls, Canada?
An eTA is for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada. It is not required for US citizens, and not when arriving by land, sea or rail, though a valid passport is still required. Visa-required nationalities still need a visitor visa. Check the IRCC page for your nationality.
Where can I check border wait times?
Use the CBP wait-time page for US-bound traffic, the CBSA page for Canada-bound traffic, and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission traffic page. On the evening of October 17, 2026, waits at Rainbow Bridge were about 5 to 6 minutes, but that is a snapshot.
Which bridge is NEXUS-only?
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge as the dedicated NEXUS-only crossing. We did not verify its hours, and one search excerpt suggested a Rainbow Bridge NEXUS lane that the Commission page does not support. Confirm before you rely on it.
