Toronto to Niagara Falls: Train, Bus, Car or Tour Compared

Door-to-door time, cost for 1, 2 and 4 travellers, and a clear rule for which option fits you.

Short answerDriving is the most flexible way from Toronto: 131 km, about 1 h 41 m in free-flow traffic. The weekend GO train and WEGO package is C$22 per adult. Our shared coach tour is C$89.99 per adult and removes driving, parking and planning. For four people sharing a car, driving is usually the cheapest option.

Fares, schedules and parking checked on October 17, 2026. They change often: confirm with each operator before you travel.

Train, bus, car or tour: the comparison

This page compares the four realistic ways to reach the Canadian side of Niagara Falls from downtown Toronto for a day. It uses published fares where an operator publishes them, and labels every assumption we had to make. For Buffalo and New York City routes, see getting to Niagara Falls.

Assumptions behind the car lines

  • Distance: 131 km each way from Union Station (route model) plus about 18 km of local driving, so 280 km for the day.
  • Fuel use: 7.9 litres per 100 km, the blended city and highway figure in the Government of Canada's 2026 travel-rate study. Highway-only driving on the QEW may use less.
  • Fuel price: C$1.85 a litre, our assumption. Toronto-area regular gas was about 179 cents on October 1, 2026 and forecast between about 182 and 193 cents in the days after, per CP24 and a GasWizard forecast. At C$1.85 the trip uses 22.1 litres, about C$41 of fuel.
  • Parking: Niagara Parks lists Falls Parking, Queen Victoria Place and the Floral Showhouse lot as variable-rate. Its October to December chart shows C$35.00 from October 13 to 31, C$30.00 from November 1 to 12, C$35.00 from November 13 to December 17 and C$40.00 from December 18 to 31. The chart shows no unit or tax note, so we read it as a per-day price. Summer rates are not verified, so treat C$35 as a placeholder for other months.
  • Rapidsview park and ride: C$10 for the day, about 7 to 8 minutes by WEGO to Table Rock, and closed for winter. WEGO is C$16 for 24 hours per adult.
  • Full vehicle cost: the government rate of C$0.63 a kilometre for Ontario covers fuel plus depreciation, insurance and maintenance for someone driving 20,000 km a year. For a single trip, your real extra cost is closer to the fuel and parking line.
  • No tolls: the QEW is a free highway. The 407 ETR is a separate toll road and is not needed for this trip.

Reading the table

  • With these assumptions, the weekend GO package costs less than driving for 1 to 3 travellers, and driving wins at 4. On weekdays, the GO package costs less for 1 or 2 travellers and driving wins from 3.
  • The tour costs more than any do-it-yourself option on out-of-pocket cost. The extra money buys no driving or parking, a guide, a maple syrup tasting and a stop in Niagara-on-the-Lake. If those matter to you, the gap is the price of that convenience. If they do not, a car or the weekend train is better value.
  • Children: GO trains are free for ages 12 and under, and Niagara Parks lists children's GO package fares "from just $9". Our tour lists C$79.99 for a child. Family totals therefore differ from the all-adult figures above.

GO train to Niagara Falls

GO Transit runs a train from Toronto Union Station to the Niagara Falls GO station at 4267 Bridge Street. GO says Niagara trains run year-round. Niagara Parks sells a 1-day package that bundles the GO return with a 24-hour WEGO bus pass: C$34 on weekdays and C$22 on weekends for adults. The 2-day package is C$40 on weekdays and C$35 on weekends and adds 48 hours of WEGO and the Falls Incline Railway. The combo ticket is non-refundable. You can board at Union or Exhibition, Port Credit, Oakville or Burlington, and the Niagara Parks page lists free parking at Port Credit, Oakville and Burlington stations.

  • Travel time: a Metrolinx notice from an earlier year shows 2 h 20 m on its last weekend westbound trip (Union 5:03 pm, Niagara Falls 7:23 pm). Timetables have changed since, so use it as an order of magnitude and read the live trip planner.
  • Weekend service: Metrolinx and a Niagara tourism blog describe about four trips each way on Saturdays and Sundays since the November 2025 expansion.
  • Weekday service: a NOW Toronto report from September 1, 2026 says Metrolinx cut the 9:10 am Union to Niagara Falls train and the 1:02 pm and 7:59 pm Niagara Falls to Union trains from September 8, expected to last until spring 2027. We could not confirm this on a Metrolinx page. The backup is a Lakeshore West train to Burlington, then GO Bus 12 to the Niagara Falls Bus Terminal across from the GO station.
  • From the station to the falls: the package includes WEGO, and Niagara Parks says WEGO takes you to Table Rock Centre. We could not verify the ride time or the walking time from the station, so ask the operator.

A standalone GO fare for Union to Niagara Falls is not on the GO fares page we could load (it says fares depend on distance and adults save 15 percent with PRESTO or a card). We have not published a number for it.

Intercity bus

FlixBus lists Toronto to Niagara Falls with 13 departures a day, a minimum journey of about 1 h 30 m, and first and last departures between 00:10 and 23:10 on the page we read. Toronto stops include the Union Station bus terminal at 81 Bay Street, Scarborough Centre, Pearson Airport Terminal 1, Harbourfront and Yorkdale. Niagara Falls stops include Rapidsview, Table Rock (6690 Niagara River Parkway), Mount Carmel Centre and the Niagara Falls Transit Terminal. The French-language FlixBus page shows "from 10.48 EUR" and the .com page shows "from $8.98" without naming the currency, so we treat about C$9 each way as the cheapest advance fare. Peak and last-minute fares are higher, and aggregator sites show one-way ranges up to about C$75.

Megabus Canada appears on aggregator sites for this route, but we could not confirm it on an operator page, so check ca.megabus.com before relying on it.

VIA Rail and Amtrak

The Amtrak Maple Leaf runs daily between New York and Toronto, with stops that include Niagara Falls, Ontario, per Amtrak. Whether it works as a Toronto to Niagara Falls day trip on your date depends on its timetable and fare, which we could not verify. One undated guide lists a morning departure from Toronto at 8:20 am and fares from about C$26, while an Amtrak forum post disputes availability on weekdays in the off season. Amtrak also lists service adjustments for October 17 and 18, 2026. Check Amtrak or VIA Rail for your date. The Niagara Falls station is unstaffed, has no lockers or baggage storage and has free unsupervised parking, per VIA Rail.

Driving: what to know

  • Route: the QEW from Toronto through Hamilton, Burlington and St. Catharines, then Highway 420 or Lundy's Lane into Niagara Falls. The QEW is about 110 km from Highway 427 in Toronto to Highway 420 and has a 110 km/h limit on most of the route, with slower sections.
  • Timing: our route model gives 1 h 41 m free-flow from Union Station. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours on summer Fridays and Sundays. Leaving Toronto early, before the morning peak, is the usual way to avoid the worst of it.
  • Parking: see the cost section. There is no overnight parking at Niagara Parks lots. Our parking guide covers the lots near the boat docks.
  • Boat dock: Niagara City Cruises has no lot of its own; its directions list the SkyWheel and Fallsview lots, and the Rainbow Bridge lot is about a 10-minute walk away.

Winter driving and travel

Environment Canada's normals for the Niagara Falls station show 47.7 cm of snow in January and about 2.2 days a year with freezing rain, mostly January to March. Ontario's winter driving page advises four winter tires, keeping the tank at least half full and checking 511on.ca for road conditions. Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Takes Flight and the Power Station are open year-round; the boats are seasonal. See Niagara Falls in winter. If you do not want to judge the roads on the day, the train, a bus or a guided tour moves that decision to someone else, although trains and buses can also be delayed by snow.

Where our tour fits

We sell one guided shared day tour from downtown Toronto. It is C$89.99 per adult (C$79.99 child and senior), leaves at 8:30 am from a downtown point we confirm, carries 10 to 30 passengers and returns about 5:30 pm, traffic permitting. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. The boat ride is an optional add-on (C$47.95 per adult, seasonal). Read the full itinerary and prices, or send a booking request; no payment is taken on the form.

It suits people who want the logistics handled. It does not suit people who want an early start, a late finish or the freedom to choose stops, and the next section says so plainly.

Who should not take a guided tour

  • Groups of 3 or 4 sharing a car. Driving is about C$19 each against C$89.99 each for the tour, before any extras.
  • Anyone who wants more than about 2.5 hours at the falls or a fully flexible day. A self-drive day can give you several hours more; see the self-guided itinerary.
  • Visitors who want the illuminated falls or fireworks. The tour is back in Toronto about 5:30 pm.
  • People who dislike group schedules or being on a coach with up to 30 others.
  • Budget-first solo travellers on a weekend. The GO package at C$22 or a low bus fare costs far less than C$89.99.
  • Anyone with specific access needs should tell us before booking, or consider a private tour; we confirm what is possible before you pay.

Border, documents and luggage

Toronto to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is a domestic trip, so there is no border crossing, and our tour stays in Canada. Carrying photo ID is sensible, but no document check applies on this route. If you add the American side, you need the documents for that crossing: see the border and passport guide. Niagara Parks says the Whirlpool Aero Car crosses the Canada-US border four times and needs no passport. On luggage, the VIA Rail station in Niagara Falls has no lockers or baggage storage, so a day trip with large bags is awkward by rail. A car or the tour coach is easier; ask each operator about its luggage rules.

What the sources do not say

  • A standalone GO fare and current GO train times for your date. Use the GO trip planner.
  • Whether Megabus currently serves Toronto to Niagara Falls, and the Maple Leaf's Toronto to Niagara Falls timetable and fare.
  • Summer parking rates at the variable-rate Niagara Parks lots.
  • The WEGO ride time and walking time from the GO station to the falls.
  • Our tour's travel time to the falls beyond its published schedule: the coach reaches the falls at about 11:30 am after two stops.

Add boat tickets and meals with the trip cost calculator, and plan the day itself with the day trip itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to get from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

A FlixBus advance fare is the lowest published price we found, from about C$9 each way, though the currency was not stated and peak fares are higher. After that, the weekend GO train and WEGO package costs C$22 per adult for a return trip. A car shared by four people comes to about C$19 each in fuel and parking on our assumptions.

How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

The route is 131 km from Union Station and takes about 1 h 41 m in free-flow conditions per our route model. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours on summer Fridays and Sundays. Add 15 to 30 minutes to park and walk to the falls. The QEW has no tolls.

Is there a train from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Yes. GO Transit runs a train from Union Station to the Niagara Falls GO station at 4267 Bridge Street, and GO says it operates year-round. A Metrolinx notice shows about 2 h 20 m on a weekend trip. A news report says three weekday trips were cut from September 8, 2026, so check the trip planner.

How much is the GO train to Niagara Falls?

Niagara Parks sells a 1-day package that includes the GO return and a 24-hour WEGO bus pass: C$22 for adults on weekends and C$34 on weekdays. Children 12 and under ride GO free. A standalone GO fare for the route was not verified, so confirm it in the GO planner. The combo ticket is non-refundable.

Is there a bus from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Yes. FlixBus lists 13 departures a day from stops such as Union Station bus terminal, Pearson Airport and Harbourfront to stops in Niagara Falls including Table Rock, with a minimum journey of about 1 h 30 m. Advance fares start from about C$9. Megabus Canada was not confirmed on an operator page, so check it separately.

Is driving cheaper than taking a guided tour?

Usually, yes. With our assumptions, a car costs about C$76 in fuel and parking, which is C$38 each for two and C$19 each for four. Our shared tour is C$89.99 per adult. The tour adds a guide, no driving or parking and a stop in Niagara-on-the-Lake, but the out-of-pocket gap is large for groups sharing a car.

Do I need a passport to go from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

No. Toronto to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is a trip within Canada, so there is no border crossing, and our shared tour stays in Canada. You need passports or equivalent documents only if you plan to cross to the American side, for example to board the Maid of the Mist.

Is a guided tour from Toronto worth it?

It is worth it if you want no driving, parking or planning, a guide and Niagara-on-the-Lake in one day. It is poor value if you are a group of three or four sharing a car, want more than about 2.5 hours at the falls, or want to stay for the evening lights. Our tour is C$89.99 per adult.

Is it safe to drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls in winter?

Many people do it, but conditions vary. Environment Canada normals show 47.7 cm of snow in January and about 2.2 days a year of freezing rain, mostly January to March. Ontario advises four winter tires and checking 511on.ca before you leave. If the forecast is poor, a train, bus or tour moves the risk.

How much does it cost to park at Niagara Falls?

Niagara Parks lists Rapidsview at C$10 for the day (seasonal, with a WEGO ride to Table Rock) and most attraction lots at C$8 an hour. Its variable-rate lots near the falls show C$35.00 from October 13 to 31 on the October to December chart. We could not verify summer rates, and overnight parking is not allowed.

Can I do Niagara Falls from Toronto without a car?

Yes. Options are the GO train with a WEGO pass, FlixBus to a stop at Table Rock, and a guided coach tour. A day trip is realistic on any of them, but check the last return time before you plan dinner or the lit falls, since the tour is back in Toronto about 5:30 pm.
