Researched from the operator's own pages on October 17, 2026. See the notes below on what we could not verify.
This page covers jet boats separately from the two sightseeing cruises, which are the only boat tours that reach the base of the falls: Niagara City Cruises and Maid of the Mist. Our research found the evidence thin, so we publish only what the operator's pages state and mark where those pages conflict or are silent. We have not ridden a jet boat.
Who runs jet boat tours
We verified one operator: Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, with two docks. The Canadian dock is at 55 River Frontage Road, Queenston, Ontario; the company labels the site Niagara Falls, Ontario. The US dock is at 115 S Water Street, Lewiston, New York. The company's phone is 1-888-438-4444. The FAQ says 'We have 9 boats in our fleet' but itemises only eight: one Freedom Jet holding 62, five Wet Jets holding 48 each, and two holding 54 each.
We searched for Niagara Jet Adventures, Niagara Jet Boat Tours and other Lewiston Gorge operators. We found no separate operator pages for those names and could not tie any of them to Whirlpool, so we do not list them. If you find another operator, check its licence and rules before booking.
Route and duration
All tours use the same route, about 45 minutes round trip, upriver into the Niagara Gorge and through the Class V Devil's Hole Rapids to the Niagara Whirlpool, then back to the dock. Plan for more time than 45 minutes: the operator tells guests to arrive at least 45 minutes early to register and attend the safety orientation. Late arrivals who miss the orientation are moved to the next trip, and late arrivals receive no refund or credit.
Wet or dry: which boat
| Boat | Wet level | Who can ride | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wet Jet | Open top; every seat gets wet | Minimum height 44 in | 48 to 54 per boat, first come, first served |
| DRY Freedom Jet | Enclosed; riders stay dry | Minimum height 40 in | 62 on the Freedom Jet |
| WET Freedom Jet | Mostly enclosed; 12 open Power Row seats in the front two rows are wet | Adults only: 13 or older and 100 lb | Guaranteed front seats; limited departures |
On the Wet Jet, seating is first come, first served after the safety orientation and cannot be reserved. The captain and crew determine seating. On inclement days wet-boat riders may receive splash gear that helps keep you warmer, not drier. Read do you get wet for how that compares with the sightseeing cruises.
Age, height, weight and health limits
- Wet Jet: minimum height 44 inches; children are measured on site and may be turned away.
- DRY Freedom Jet: minimum height 40 inches.
- WET Freedom Jet: adults only, 13 or older and 100 lb.
- Front rows: guests 12 and under (one page footnote says under 13) and/or under 100 lb cannot sit in the first 3 to 4 rows. The pages disagree on the exact numbers, so ask.
- The FAQ says guests aged 13 to 15 must sit with a guest aged 16 or older to ride the first 3 to 4 rows, with an adult chaperone (18+) on board; guests aged 16 to 17 may ride those rows with an 18+ chaperone on board; and guests under 18 may not ride without an 18+ chaperone. The policies page says all children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- No upper age limit, but riders should be in good health.
- Not recommended with osteoporosis or heart, neck or back problems (the policies page adds respiratory issues). Pregnant women are not permitted.
The operator's own rule is the height minimum (its FAQ illustrates 44 inches as the height of an average 6-year-old), not an age. For child safety questions see Niagara Falls with kids and boat tour safety.
Ticket-page prices (year not stated)
| Product | Queenston (CAD) | Lewiston (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Wet Jet or DRY Freedom Jet, adult | 78.95 | 68.95 |
| Child 12 and under | 44.95 | 39.95 |
| WET Freedom Jet (adult only) | 88.95 | 78.95 |
The ticket page lists 13% HST on Canadian rates and a 6% fuel surcharge on all Canadian and US rates; no US tax rate is listed. Two cautions. First, the page displays each price in two fragments, such as '78' and '95'; we read them as .95, and a search of US fares agrees on 68.95 for Lewiston. Second, the page does not state a year, and one subpage footer reads 2020, so confirm the current price at checkout. Resellers list different figures, which we do not use. Put these beside the sightseeing fares on boat tour prices.
Season and schedule
The operator's pages we read give no season dates and no departure times. They say schedules vary daily with weather, time of season and demand, that reservations are recommended, that walk-ons are taken on availability, and that most trips sell out in the summer months. Third-party listings say May to October; we could not confirm that on an operator page, and with today being October 17, 2026, call before you travel. The home page says the company was hiring for the 2026 season.
What to wear, bring and leave
- Life vests are provided and mandatory.
- Closed footwear or sandals; barefoot riding is not allowed. River sandals can be bought at check-in.
- The operator recommends a complete change of clothes and has on-site change rooms.
- Wet tours: hats, sunglasses or glasses and a waterproof camera with a wrist strap are allowed. Keys, wallets and phones must be left behind.
- Dry tours: small bags, cameras and phones are allowed.
- Free lockers at all locations.
Cancellations and accessibility
All tickets are final sale and refunds are not offered for any reason, including weather and mechanical delays. Cancelling or rescheduling within 24 hours of the booked departure carries a 10% rebooking fee. In bad weather the company issues rain-check vouchers valid for any date, time or location. Groups pay a 25% deposit that is forfeited if the booking is cancelled within 48 hours. The dock is wheelchair accessible; the boat is not. Staff help guests on and off the boat. See accessibility.
Jet boat or sightseeing cruise?
| Sightseeing cruise | Jet boat | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | Base of the Horseshoe Falls | Lower gorge, Devil's Hole Rapids and the Whirlpool |
| Length | About 20 minutes | About 45 minutes |
| Sees the falls? | Yes | No |
| Wet | Mist and spray, ponchos given | Wet boats soak you; a dry boat is available |
| Limits | Few; Maid of the Mist states no age limit | Height, age, weight and health limits |
- First visit, want the falls: a sightseeing cruise. Start with the master guide or the chooser.
- Have done the cruise and want speed: a Dry or Wet Freedom Jet.
- Travelling with a young child: check height, age and seating rules first; the cruise is simpler.
- On a Toronto day trip: the day tour does not include a jet boat; the only boat add-on listed is the Niagara City Cruises ride.
What we could not verify
Operator season dates for 2026 and 2027, departure times, whether the price year is 2026, the status of any operator called Niagara Jet Adventures or Niagara Jet Boat Tours, any other jet boat operator in Lewiston, and the service-animal policy. We did not find them on the pages we read. Details are saved in our research notes with URLs.
Frequently asked questions
Do jet boats go to Niagara Falls?
No. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours says on its FAQ that its boats cannot go over the falls and that the tours do not show Niagara Falls. The route runs up the lower gorge through the Class V Devil's Hole Rapids to the Niagara Whirlpool, then returns. Only the two sightseeing cruises go to the base of the falls.
How long is a jet boat tour?
About 45 minutes round trip from either dock, according to the operator's FAQ. The operator also says guests must arrive at least 45 minutes early at Niagara Falls or Lewiston to register and attend the safety orientation, so allow roughly one and a half to two hours in all.
How much does a jet boat tour cost?
The operator's ticket page, checked October 17, 2026, shows CA$78.95 adult and CA$44.95 child for the Wet Jet and Dry Freedom Jet at Queenston, and US$68.95 and US$39.95 at Lewiston. The WET Freedom Jet is CA$88.95 or US$78.95. Canadian rates add 13% HST, and a 6% fuel surcharge applies. The page does not state a year.
Will I get wet?
On the Wet Jet, the operator says every seat gets wet and that you get absolutely soaked. The Dry Freedom Jet is enclosed and keeps riders dry. The Wet Freedom Jet is mostly enclosed with 12 open Power Row seats in the front two rows. Choose the Dry Freedom Jet if you want to stay dry.
What are the age, height and health limits?
Wet Jet needs a minimum height of 44 inches; Dry Freedom Jet 40 inches; WET Freedom Jet is adults only, 13 or older and 100 lb. The operator does not recommend the ride with osteoporosis or heart, neck or back problems, and pregnant women are not permitted. Children are measured on site.
Can wheelchair users ride a jet boat?
The operator's FAQ says the dock is wheelchair accessible but the boat is not. Staff help guests on and off the boat, a support person may wait on the dock, and seat placement is at the captain's discretion. Contact the operator on 1-888-438-4444 before booking if you have a mobility concern.
Can I get a refund or change my date?
The operator says all tickets are final sale with no refunds, and changes within 24 hours of departure carry a 10% rebooking fee. It runs rain or shine and issues rain-check vouchers, not refunds, for weather. Late arrivals who miss the safety orientation are moved to the next trip, with no credit if the delay was theirs.
Is a jet boat better than the Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises?
They are different rides. The sightseeing boats are 20-minute, calm-water trips to the base of the falls. The jet boat is a 45-minute fast ride in a gorge that does not show the falls. If your main goal is the falls, take a sightseeing boat; if you want speed and have taken one already, a jet boat adds that.
