Which side should you visit for the boat?
Pick the side where you are sleeping. A boat ride is a 20-minute activity, so spending a half day on borders to reach the other boat rarely pays off. The boats are close in route and length. The meaningful differences are what surrounds the boat: the price, the season, the evening options and what you can do on land. The master guide, Niagara Falls boat tours, sets out both operators. This page is for the question that comes first: which country?
| Question | Canada | USA |
|---|---|---|
| Boat | Niagara City Cruises, Voyage to the Falls | Maid of the Mist |
| Adult price (2026) | from C$47.95 + 13% HST | US$30.25 |
| Season | Opened May 1; no closing date published | April 24 to November 8, 2026 |
| Ticket | Timed | Voucher, first come, first served |
| Evening cruise | Yes, select evenings, about 40 minutes | No |
| Passport to board | Not a boat rule; visitors coming from the USA need border documents to enter Canada | None (operator says no passport or ID needed) |
| Wide choice of attractions | Our reading: more paid attractions near the water (Niagara Parks, Skylon, SkyWheel, Clifton Hill) | State Park, Observation Tower, Goat Island, Cave of the Winds |

Views from land
Which side has the better view of the falls is partly taste, and none of our sources ranks them. What we can say with sources: Niagara Parks calls the Queen Victoria Park lawn and parapet wall the best place to watch the Falls fireworks, and viewing in the park is free. The Observation Tower on the US side is open to all visitors without a boat ticket, though the page we saw mentions a closed far end and an unfinished Crow's Nest, and its hours looked out of date. Check before you plan around it.
For photographers, both sides are described on our photography guide. We do not publish sun-angle claims for specific falls at specific times, since we have not verified them.
Attractions on each side, with prices
Canada has the larger set of paid attractions close to the water. Niagara Parks prices in Canadian dollars, before tax, adult and child (3 to 12), are in the table.
| Attraction (Canada) | Adult | Child (3 to 12; Skylon 4 to 12) | Typical time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Journey Behind the Falls | C$33.00 | C$21.50 | about 60 min |
| Niagara Takes Flight | C$33.00 | C$21.50 | about 35 min |
| Power Station + Tunnel | C$33.00 | C$21.50 | about 120 min |
| White Water Walk (seasonal) | C$21.00 | C$13.50 | about 60 min |
| Skylon observation deck | C$18.00 | C$9.00 | not stated |
| Niagara SkyWheel (+ HST) | C$15.00 | C$7.00 | not stated |
On the US side, Niagara Falls State Park has the Observation Tower, Goat Island and the Cave of the Winds. Our sources do not give a verified current price for Cave of the Winds, so see the Cave of the Winds guide and the State Park guide. The Niagara Falls Pass is a Canadian product; in 2026 its tiers cost C$89, C$109 and C$129 and none includes a boat tour. See passes and discounts. Journey Behind the Falls is also listed at C$28 and C$18.50 on the pass presale page; the attraction page shows the figures above, so confirm at checkout.
Parking and costs on each side
| Lot | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| USA: State Park Lot 1, 333 Prospect St | $10 daily from Oct 12, 2026 to Mar 31, 2027. May 22 to Oct 11: $10 Mon to Thu, $15 Fri to Sun | Closest to the Maid of the Mist; autos only; lots fill early on Fridays, weekends and holidays |
| USA: Goat Island lots 2 and 3 | Same fees for Lot 2; Lot 3 cars $10 with fees Fri to Mon and holidays 8:30 to 5, May 22 to Sep 7, free Tue to Thu | Walk or take the trolley to the Observation Tower |
| Canada: Rapidsview Lot C, 4555 Upper Rapids Rd | C$10 per day | About 7 to 8 minutes by WEGO Green Line to Table Rock; free with an online Niagara Falls Pass |
| Canada: Rainbow Bridge lot, 4348 Hiram St | C$12 per hour | About a 10-minute walk to Niagara City Cruises |
| Canada: lots near the boat (SkyWheel, 4960 Clifton Hill; Fallsview, 6650 Niagara Pkwy) | Flat daily fee; price not found | 700+ spaces; no overnight or in-and-out |
Niagara City Cruises has no lot of its own. Overnight parking is not allowed at Niagara Parks lots. See boat tour parking and getting to Niagara Falls. The Canadian lot at $8 per hour (Butterfly Conservatory and other sites) is not near the boat. A rough cost model for a pair of adults in the middle of the week would be tickets plus parking: see the trip cost calculator, which uses these figures.
Evenings: illumination, fireworks and cruises
Evenings are the clearest difference. In Canada Niagara Parks lights the falls every evening at dusk. The 2026 schedule has lights on at 6:00 pm from October 16 to 31 and 4:30 pm from November 1 to December 31, and off at 2:00 am (1:00 am in January and February to March 11). The fireworks ran nightly at 10:00 pm from May 15 to October 12, 2026, weather permitting, free to view, and that season has ended. The 2027 schedule is unpublished.
The boat side of the evening is the Falls Fireworks Cruise, about 40 minutes on select evenings from spring to fall, with gates closing 20 minutes before departure. On the US side, Maid of the Mist's published closing times end before computed sunset on every month we checked, so it is a daytime attraction. Our night and fireworks guide explains what the boat does after sunset. The Winter Festival of Lights for 2026-27 has no officially announced dates as of October 17, 2026.
Border logistics in short
- To ride Maid of the Mist: no passport or ID is needed to board, according to the operator. You do need documents to enter the USA from Canada.
- To ride Voyage to the Falls from the USA: you cross into Canada. The Rainbow Bridge toll for a car is US$6.00 or C$8.50, collected entering Canada. Pedestrians pay US$1.00 or C$1.25 going to the USA.
- Pedestrian caution: the bridge is listed as open 24 hours by CBP, but on the evening of October 17, 2026 its feed showed pedestrian lanes closed. Check before you walk.
- Wait times: use the CBP and CBSA wait-time pages. Single snapshots on October 17 showed 5 or 6 minutes, which says nothing about summer.
- eTA: not required for US citizens or when arriving in Canada by land.
The full picture, including the Peace Bridge tolls and NEXUS, is in the border and passport guide.
Getting between the two sides
The Rainbow Bridge is the usual crossing for visitors. It allows pedestrians, and the bridge commission lists no trucks or commercial vehicles on it. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is the dedicated NEXUS-only crossing, though we could not confirm its hours. The Peace Bridge, near Buffalo, charges cars US$4.00 with E-ZPass or US$8.00 by card, and C$11.00, Canada-bound only; pedestrians and cyclists cross free. Pedestrians are not permitted on the Lewiston-Queenston or Whirlpool bridges.
From the Rainbow Bridge, the Canadian boarding area is under 1 km away according to the operator. We found no published walking time from the bridge to Maid of the Mist, so we give none.
A sample budget for two adults on each side
This is arithmetic on published 2026 figures, not a quote. It leaves out meals, tips, tax on the US fare (not stated) and attractions.
| Item | Canada day | US day |
|---|---|---|
| Two adult boat tickets | C$108.37 (2 x C$47.95 + 13% HST) | US$60.50 (2 x US$30.25) |
| Parking (one choice) | C$10.00 for Rapidsview Lot C for the day, or C$12.00 per hour at the Rainbow Bridge lot | US$10.00 to US$15.00 at State Park Lot 1 (autumn: US$10.00) |
| Journey Behind the Falls (optional, 2 adults) | C$66.00 plus tax | n/a |
| Border toll if crossing by car | C$8.50 entering Canada | none returning to the USA |
The border toll appears only if you cross by car. The Canadian dollar figures are not converted here. If you need to compare, the Rainbow Bridge toll ratio of 1.417 is illustrative only, not today's rate. The trip cost calculator does the sums for your party.
How to do both sides in a day: a time budget
Doing both sides in one day is feasible mainly in summer. Here is what we can source, and what we cannot.
| Item | Published | Not published |
|---|---|---|
| Maid of the Mist closing time (2026) | 8:00 pm Jun 22 to Aug 9; 7:30 pm Aug 10 to 30; 5:00 pm Sep 28 to Oct 31; 4:00 pm Nov 1 to 8 | Time of the last departure; ticket office closes 15 minutes earlier |
| Niagara City Cruises (from May 1) | Every 30 minutes, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm | Extended hours from May 15 |
| Ride time | About 20 minutes on each boat | Queue time, which varies by season and hour |
| Rainbow Bridge | Listed open 24 hours by CBP; under 1 km from the Canadian boarding area | Crossing time at your hour; pedestrian lane status |
A workable sequence in June to early August is: morning on the side where you are staying, cross the bridge at mid-day, and ride the second boat before the 8:00 pm close. For an autumn visit the margin is much smaller, since Maid of the Mist closes at 5:00 pm from September 28 and the ticket office shuts 15 minutes before the last departure. Our planning rule, which is our own estimate and not an operator figure: build in a buffer for each crossing, each queue and each walk, and ride the US boat first in autumn, since its hours are the shortest.
Most visitors will do better to ride one boat and spend the saved hours on the rest of the falls. If you want one day with transport solved, see the itineraries and the day tours. Our Toronto day tour (see Toronto to Niagara Falls day tour) visits the Canadian side, with the boat as an optional paid add-on.
Verdict
- Based in Ontario: keep to the Canadian side. Ride Voyage to the Falls, add Journey Behind the Falls, and see the lit falls at dusk.
- Based in New York: keep to the US side. Ride Maid of the Mist (US$30.25) and use the State Park. It is the lower-friction, lower-cost choice.
- First visit with a free day and the right documents: if you can only choose one, Canada has more to do after the boat and the only evening cruises. That is our editorial view, based on the attractions list above, not on a ride.
- Travelling after Nov 8: the US boat is closed; check the Canadian operator.
- Tight on money: the US boat is cheaper at face value, and the border adds a toll for cars.

What the sources do not say
- Which side has the better view from land, and when the sun lights which fall.
- Current Cave of the Winds pricing and the US-side evening options.
- Queue times and border crossing times in peak season.
- Parking prices at the dock-area lots in Canada.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to see Niagara Falls from the Canadian or American side?
Our sources do not rank the views. The practical differences are the boat (Maid of the Mist in the USA, Voyage to the Falls in Canada), the number of attractions, evening illumination and fireworks in Canada, and the border. Most visitors do best by staying on the side where they sleep.
Is the Canadian boat tour better than the American one?
Neither is clearly better. Both are about 20 minutes and end at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. Canada is more expensive at face value and sells timed tickets. The USA is cheaper and boards first come, first served. See our comparison page.
Can I do both sides in one day?
Yes, mainly in summer. Maid of the Mist closes at 8:00 pm from June 22 to August 9 and at 5:00 pm from September 28 to October 31. You also need to cross the border twice. Queue and crossing times are not published, so build in a buffer.
Do I need a passport to see Niagara Falls from the US side?
Not to ride Maid of the Mist, according to the operator, which says no passport or ID is needed to board. You do need documents to cross from Canada to the USA. Check the CBP and CBSA pages for your citizenship before travelling.
How much is parking at Niagara Falls?
On the US side, State Park Lot 1 is $10 daily from October 12, 2026, and in summer it is $10 Monday to Thursday and $15 Friday to Sunday. In Canada, Niagara Parks Rainbow Bridge lot is C$12 per hour, and Rapidsview Lot C is C$10 per day with a shuttle.
Which side has night views and fireworks?
The Canadian side. Niagara Parks lights the falls nightly at dusk, and the 2026 fireworks ran at 10:00 pm until October 12. The 2027 fireworks schedule is not published. Maid of the Mist has no evening sailing in its published hours.
What is the Rainbow Bridge toll?
For a passenger car it is US$6.00 or C$8.50, collected one way, entering Canada. Pedestrians pay US$1.00 or C$1.25, collected going into the USA. Nothing is charged for a car returning to the USA. Tolls took effect in this form on May 1, 2025, so check the bridge commission page for changes.
Is Maid of the Mist cheaper than the Canadian boat?
At face value, yes: US$30.25 against from C$47.95 plus 13% HST. At the Rainbow Bridge toll ratio of 1.417, an illustrative figure and not an exchange rate, the US fare is about C$42.85. Child fares, tax and parking change the total, so use our trip cost calculator for your party.
