Niagara Falls itineraries around the boat tour

One-, two- and three-day plans built on sourced boat hours and the lights, with variants for season, rain, kids and no car.

Sunrise light over the crest of the Horseshoe Falls
Short answerPlan around three fixed points: boat hours (Maid of the Mist 9 am to 5 pm in October, 4 pm from Nov 1; Niagara City Cruises' autumn hours are unpublished), attraction hours you must check, and the lights at dusk. Plans cover one to three days, with variants for season, rain, kids and no car.

Verified against the official pages on October 17, 2026.

These plans are built so that every step fits the hours we could source. Where we could not read an attraction's hours, the step says "check hours" and we leave slack around it. They are templates, not promises: operators change hours without notice. Pair this page with the season checker, the attraction guide and the first-time visitor guide. If you want the logistics handled, see our Toronto day tour.

The fixed clock: what is open and when

These are the times everything else hangs on. Maid of the Mist hours come from the operator's 2026 schedule; sunset times are computed (plus or minus 3 minutes); illumination times are Niagara Parks' published schedule.

On the Canadian side, Niagara City Cruises sailed every 30 minutes from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm when the season opened on May 1, with extended hours from May 15 but no times given, no end date and no autumn hours found; check its calendar. After sunset its boats go only to the outer edge of the Horseshoe Falls, which the operator attributes to regulations; before sunset they go into the heart of the falls. See the operator guide and the night cruise guide.

One day, Canadian side

This version fits late September to October. Shift the evening items later in summer using the table above. Niagara City Cruises' 9:30 am first sailing is from its May 1 opening schedule; we did not find published hours for late autumn, so confirm the first and last sailing for your date.

The total of boat plus Journey for two adults at published fares is about C$162 before tax (C$95.90 plus C$66). The calculator adds the rest.

One day, US side

Hours for this plan are mid-October to early November: Maid of the Mist daily 9 am to 5 pm to October 31 (9 am to 4 pm from November 1), Cave of the Winds 9 am to 4 pm from October 21 (closed October 19 and 20), and the trolley 9 am to 5 pm. The ticket office at the boat closes 15 minutes before the last departure.

  1. 9:00Park (Lot 1 or 2, $10 daily); Observation TowerFree to ride the elevator; no boat ticket needed. The tower hours on the park site look stale; check.
  2. 9:30Maid of the MistBoats every 15 minutes in the season; first come, first served; about 20 min. Voucher or booth ticket US$30.25 adult.
  3. 10:45Cave of the Winds on Goat IslandTimed; buy at the attraction. Adult $14 from Oct 19. Bring dry shoes for afterwards.
  4. 12:30Lunch at Top of the Falls Restaurant or in the parkHours not verified.
  5. 14:00Terrapin Point, Luna Island, Three Sisters IslandsFree walking; the trolley circuit runs about every 30 minutes.
  6. 15:30Great Lakes 360 / Aquarium (optional)Check hours; they conflict across sources.
  7. 16:00Wrap upCave of the Winds is listed to 4 pm and the trolley runs to 5 pm; sunset is about 18:35 mid-October.

In July and August the same day has more room: Maid of the Mist runs until 8 pm, so you can ride the boat late and skip the crowded middle of the day. For the park's facts, see the State Park guide, and for the Cave itself the Cave of the Winds guide.

Two days

Day 1 is the Canadian one-day plan above. Day 2 splits by what you like:

OptionMorningAfternoonCheck
Wine and historyDrive the Niagara Parkway (about 22 to 27 min to Niagara-on-the-Lake)Fort George (Wed to Sun, 10 am to 5 pm to Nov 1), then a wineryWinery hours; WEGO Orange Line if no car; see the day trip guide
The US sideMaid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds (plan above)Goat Island overlooks, or stay for the eveningPassports; Rainbow Bridge pedestrian toll US$1.00 or C$1.25; border waits via CBSA and CBP
Gorge and gardensFloral Clock, White Water Walk, Whirlpool Aero Car (April to November)Butterfly Conservatory or Niagara Glen trailsAero Car last car 20 min before closing; trails sunrise to sunset

Day 2 on the Canadian side works well with a 48-hour WEGO pass (C$20 adult, tax included).

Three days

Add a slower day: the Niagara Parks Power Station (about two hours; it is year-round and fully accessible), Niagara Glen, a long lunch and the evening Power Station at Night if it is running (no dates were published when we checked). Or do the US side as day 3 and the winery day as day 2, which spreads the border crossing and the wet activities. Leave one block free in case of rain or a late start. To limit parking costs, consider the Rapidsview lot (C$10 a day, seasonal) and WEGO; see parking and the passes guide.

Season variants

SeasonWhat changesPlan adjustment
Summer (late June to August)Maid of the Mist to 8 pm (7:30 pm from Aug 10); lights on 8:30 pm (8:00 pm Aug 1-15); fireworks at 10 pm in 2026Ride the first or last boat; do indoor attractions at midday; stay late for the show. The Canadian boat: book a slot. Peak parking is higher: Lots 1 and 2 were $15 Fri-Sun to Oct 11.
Shoulder (late Sep to Oct)Maid of the Mist to 5 pm; lights on 6:30 to 6:00 pm; fireworks ended Oct 12Boat before lunch. Plan sunset (about 18:35 mid-Oct) as the evening anchor. Fall foliage usually peaks about mid-October per the State Park.
Closing week (Nov 1 to 8)Maid of the Mist 9 am to 4 pm; Falls Pass expires Nov 1; lights at 4:30 pmBoat early in the day; do indoor attractions after; sunset is near 5 pm (16:54 on Nov 15).
After Nov 8No Maid of the Mist; Niagara City Cruises has no published end date and December sailings depend on weatherPlan around Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station, Butterfly Conservatory, Cave of the Winds (US) and the lights at 4:30 pm. See winter.

For the October picture, see Niagara Falls in October; for the best months, best time.

A rainy-day plan

Maid of the Mist says its boats run rain or shine, so a drizzle does not cancel the ride. If you want to stay drier, shift the schedule toward indoor attractions and take the boat in the clearest hour:

  • Morning: Butterfly Conservatory (indoor, accessible, about 60 min) or Floral Showhouse (indoor, C$8.50 adult).
  • Midday: Niagara Takes Flight (about 35 min) and lunch at Table Rock Centre.
  • Afternoon: Power Station (about 2 hours; the elevator and tunnel are indoors, the end deck is outdoors) or Skylon, which has an indoor level and an outdoor deck.
  • Boat: go at the first sailing if the sky clears. You will be wet either way.
  • US side: Aquarium of Niagara (hours to check) and the trolley (heated).

October averages 13.0 days with 0.2 mm or more of precipitation, so on a multi-day trip a wet day is likely. That figure is a climate normal (ECCC 1981-2010), not a forecast.

With kids

Read Niagara Falls with kids first. The itinerary-level rules:

  • Children 2 and under are free at Niagara Parks attractions; child prices apply from 3 to 12 (Maid of the Mist: child 6 to 12, 5 and under free).
  • Niagara Takes Flight requires 100 cm minimum height.
  • Journey Behind the Falls does not allow strollers; the boat operators have stroller parking (Maid of the Mist's FAQ says to leave strollers in the stroller parking).
  • Pick one wet activity per day; plan a dry change of clothes.
  • Use indoor attractions as break points: Butterfly Conservatory, Floral Showhouse.
  • Cave of the Winds age and height rules are not published on the page we read; ask before you go.

A kid-friendly Canadian day: first boat (9:30 at the May opening; confirm), a hot drink and a dry change, the Butterfly Conservatory, lunch, Takes Flight if everyone meets the height limit, and a short Clifton Hill walk before the lights at 6:00 pm (October).

No car: WEGO and GO (weekends; timetable unverified)

You can do the Canadian side without a car. Niagara Falls GO Station is served by GO trains from Toronto Union via St. Catharines; weekend service runs year-round; weekday trips were reported as three each way but not confirmed on an official page. A search excerpt of the Metrolinx fall release lists a weekend Union departure at 9:04 am arriving 11:30 am; always check the trip planner. A combined GO and WEGO fare was listed at C$22 (weekend page) or C$34 (weekday page) for one day, and the pages disagree; children 12 and under ride GO free. See getting to Niagara Falls.

  1. About 11:30Arrive at Niagara Falls GOBased on a weekend train excerpt; verify the day's timetable.
  2. 12:15WEGO to Table Rock; lunchWEGO is a hop-on, hop-off bus; the lines meet at Table Rock Centre.
  3. 13:30Niagara City Cruises sailingPlan the dock walk; funicular status is unconfirmed, so check how to reach the landing.
  4. 15:30Journey Behind the FallsCheck hours; arrive an hour before closing.
  5. 17:30Dinner; lights on at 6:00 pm (Oct 16-31)Check the last train before dinner; the return timetable was not sourced.

The key limit is the return train: we did not source the last departures, so build the day backwards from it. A 24-hour WEGO pass is C$16 for an adult; the 48-hour pass is C$20 and includes the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle. If you would rather not plan it at all, our Toronto day tour covers the transport, with the boat as a paid add-on.

If you are X, do Y

  • One day, first visit: the Canadian plan; read the first-time guide.
  • One day, you want the boat that goes into the Horseshoe basin early: take the 9:30 or the first Maid of the Mist departure.
  • Two days, mixed ages: Canada day one, wine and history or the US side day two.
  • After Nov 8: no boat on the US side; use Journey, the Power Station and the lights.
  • With a wheelchair: see boat accessibility; Journey's lower deck, the Aero Car and some trails are not accessible.

What the sources do not say

  • Daily hours for most Niagara Parks attractions, Skylon, the Zipline and the Falls Incline Railway.
  • Niagara City Cruises closing time after May 15, end date and 2027 dates.
  • GO return times, and the WEGO fall-winter timetable.
  • Walking times between the cruise dock, Table Rock and Skylon.
  • The 2026-27 Winter Festival of Lights dates (one site estimates Nov 14 to Jan 3; not official).

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need at Niagara Falls?

One day covers the boat, one or two attractions and the lights. Two days add Niagara-on-the-Lake or the US side. Three days allow the Power Station, gorge walks and a spare day for rain. The right number depends on whether you cross the border and how many paid attractions you want.

What is a good one-day Niagara Falls itinerary?

On the Canadian side: the parapet at 8:30, the first Niagara City Cruises sailing (9:30 am at its May opening; confirm), Journey Behind the Falls, lunch, Takes Flight or the Butterfly Conservatory, Skylon or the SkyWheel, and the lights at dusk. Check attraction hours, which we could not read.

Can I do the boat and the lights in the same day?

On the Canadian side, yes: ride in the morning and return for the lights, which come on at 6:00 pm in late October. Niagara City Cruises' autumn sailing hours are unpublished, so confirm them. Maid of the Mist closes at 5 pm in October and 4 pm from November 1, so its last departures are before the lights come on.

What should I do on a rainy day at Niagara Falls?

The boats run rain or shine, so you can still ride. Indoor options are the Butterfly Conservatory, Floral Showhouse, Niagara Takes Flight, the Power Station and Skylon. In the US, consider the Aquarium of Niagara after checking its hours. Pack a dry change for the boat.

What is open after November 8?

Maid of the Mist closes after November 8. Niagara City Cruises has not published an end date, and December sailings depend on weather. Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station, Niagara Takes Flight and the Butterfly Conservatory are listed year-round. The lights come on at 4:30 pm.

Can I visit Niagara Falls without a car?

Yes. GO trains run to Niagara Falls on weekends year-round, and weekday service was reported. WEGO buses link the attractions; a 24-hour pass is C$16 for adults. Check the last train home before you plan an evening, since we did not source return times.

Are the fireworks still on?

No. The 2026 Niagara Parks fireworks ran nightly at 10 pm from May 15 to October 12. The 2027 schedule has not been published. The nightly illumination continues, with lights on at 6:00 pm from October 16 and 4:30 pm from November 1.

Is there a good itinerary with kids?

Pick one wet activity per day, use the Butterfly Conservatory as a dry break, and check height limits: Niagara Takes Flight needs 100 cm. Journey Behind the Falls does not allow strollers. Start with the first boat, since mornings are usually easier. See the kids guide for more.
