Niagara-on-the-Lake sits where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. It is the standard answer to "what else is there besides the falls", and it is a pleasant answer. It is also seasonal: some of what makes the town worth a trip ends in autumn. This page gives the distance, the road, the shuttle, the sights and a schedule that starts with a boat ride. For the wider menu, see things to do near Niagara Falls.
How far is it, and how long does it take?
Route-planning sites give about 21 to 22 km and 22 to 27 minutes by car from the falls (Wanderlog is our source; there is no official figure). Wine Country Ontario describes the town as about an hour and a half from the Greater Toronto Area and about 10 minutes from the Canada-US border. Parking in the town and in wine country is not sourced here. If you drive, cost the day with the trip cost calculator.

The Niagara Parkway drive
The Niagara Parkway runs from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 55 km (some sources say 56), beside the Niagara River. Tourism sources attribute a Churchill remark to it, calling it the "prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world"; we cannot verify that attribution to the man himself. Part of the road is run by the City, not Niagara Parks. Niagara Parks sites in the corridor north of the falls include the Butterfly Conservatory (2565 Niagara Pkwy), the Whirlpool Aero Car (3850 Niagara Pkwy), White Water Walk, Niagara Glen, the Floral Clock (May to October, with free parking) and Queenston Heights, where Niagara Parks has a lot. Most Niagara Parks lots in this area charge C$8 an hour; the Aero Car lot is free; overnight parking is not allowed. See parking for lots near the falls.
The Floral Clock is useful for another reason: it is the transfer point between the WEGO lines and the Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle, so a car-free visitor can stop there and still reach the town.
Fort George
Parks Canada runs Fort George National Historic Site at 51 Queens Parade. Parks Canada describes it as a national historic site and military post that defended Upper Canada during the War of 1812. The 2026 schedule has three blocks: Saturdays and Sundays only from April 4 to May 15, every day from May 16 to September 6, and Wednesday to Sunday from September 9 to November 1, always 10 am to 5 pm. Ticket sales stop at 4:15 pm. It was closed on Labour Day. The page we read lists nothing after November 1, so assume it is closed for the winter and confirm with Parks Canada on 905-468-6614. Admission was not on the page that loaded. Parks Canada has run free-admission periods in 2026, but we could not verify one for the dates you will visit.
The days matter: a Monday or Tuesday visit now will find it closed.
Wineries and icewine
The Niagara-on-the-Lake appellation has four sub-appellations: Niagara River, Niagara Lakeshore, Four Mile Creek and St. David's Bench. VQA Ontario says the lake and river moderate temperatures and reduce the risk of spring and fall frosts, and names Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling as common grapes. Wine Country Ontario's regional page shows 40 wineries; it does not date the count or say whether it covers all four sub-appellations. The Niagara-on-the-Lake tourism office sells "Explore Passports" with discounts at some tasting rooms; we did not read the terms.
Icewine is the local specialty. Ontario's regulation requires the grapes to be naturally frozen on the vine, picked at an air temperature of minus 8 C or lower and pressed immediately in a continuous process, from vinifera varieties or the hybrid Vidal. Secondary sites add a minimum of 35 Brix, which we could not check against the regulation text. Because of the minus 8 C rule, icewine is picked in winter cold, not in October. The town's icewine festival ran on three January weekends in 2026 (January 16 to February 1); we found no 2027 dates. Winery opening hours and tasting prices vary and were not verified. Call each winery.
Shaw Festival
The Shaw Festival performs in the Festival Theatre, the Court House Theatre and the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre; the festival is at 10 Queen's Parade. Its 2026 productions ran from April 2 to October 11. Two holiday productions follow: A Year with Frog and Toad (previews from November 5) and Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella (from November 8), both to December 23. The site gave no ticket prices. Today is October 17, so the main season has ended; if theatre is the reason for your trip, wait for the holiday shows or the 2027 season, whose dates we have not seen (the site mentions Friends of the Shaw early ordering for 2027).
A day: boat in the morning, Niagara-on-the-Lake after
This assumes the Canadian boat (Niagara City Cruises), which listed a 9:30 am first sailing and sailings every 30 minutes when its season opened on May 1. We did not find published hours for late autumn, so confirm the first and last sailing for your date. A boat ride is about 20 minutes; one travel blog about Maid of the Mist puts queuing and boarding at 40 to 90 minutes, and we have no figure for Niagara City Cruises, so allow extra.

Sunset on October 15 is about 18:35 (sunrise-sunset.org gives 6:33 pm), so the lights come on close to sunset in the second half of October. The sunrise and sunset table is in the photography guide. If you want fireworks, 2026's ended on October 12; see the night and fireworks cruise guide for what to expect in 2027 (dates are unpublished).
If you would rather not drive: our Toronto day tour
Our Toronto day tour stops in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The posted itinerary lists arrival at about 2:00 pm, for roughly an hour, before the 3:45 pm departure back to Toronto. That is time for a walk along the main street, not for a winery tasting plus lunch. A boat ride at the falls is an optional paid add-on, not part of the base price. For options see day tours; questions go through the contact form.
If you are X, do Y
- If you have a car and one day, do the boat first and Niagara-on-the-Lake in the afternoon, back before the lights.
- If you have no car, buy a 24-hour WEGO pass (C$16 adult) and check the Orange Line timetable; the pass includes the shuttle.
- If you want wine, check each winery's hours and plan transport; we did not verify hours.
- If you want history, aim for Fort George between Wednesday and Sunday before November 1.
- If you want theatre, wait for the holiday productions from November 5, or the 2027 season.
- If you want icewine, plan for winter and check the festival dates.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake from Niagara Falls?
Route sites give about 21 to 22 km and 22 to 27 minutes by car. There is no official figure. The Niagara Parkway route is scenic and runs 55 to 56 km from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake in total. Traffic and season change the time, especially on summer weekends.
Can I get to Niagara-on-the-Lake without a car?
Yes. The WEGO Orange Line shuttle is included with a 24 or 48-hour WEGO pass (adult C$16 or C$20, tax included), with transfers at the Floral Clock. A seasonal FlixBus service is listed through November 2, 2026. We could not read the fall-winter timetable, so confirm times.
Is Fort George open in October and November?
Parks Canada lists 10 am to 5 pm, Wednesday to Sunday, from September 9 to November 1, 2026, with ticket sales ending at 4:15 pm. Nothing is listed after November 1, so assume it is closed for the winter. Admission was not shown on the page we read.
When is the Shaw Festival season?
In 2026 the productions ran from April 2 to October 11. Two holiday productions run in November and December, to December 23. We have not seen the 2027 season dates. Ticket prices were not on the page we read, so check with the festival.
What is icewine and when is it made?
Ontario's regulation requires grapes naturally frozen on the vine, picked at an air temperature of minus 8 C or lower and pressed immediately, from vinifera or Vidal grapes. That happens in deep winter. The Niagara-on-the-Lake icewine festival ran on January weekends in 2026.
Can I do a boat ride and Niagara-on-the-Lake in one day?
Yes, with a car. Niagara City Cruises listed a 9:30 am first sailing at its May opening; confirm autumn times. Allow extra time for boarding, then drive about 22 to 27 minutes. Check Fort George days and winery hours, and get back before the illumination, which starts at 6:00 pm in late October.
How many wineries are in Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Wine Country Ontario's regional page shows 40 wineries, but it does not date the count or say which sub-appellations it covers. VQA Ontario names four sub-appellations: Niagara River, Niagara Lakeshore, Four Mile Creek and St. David's Bench. Hours and tasting fees vary, so call ahead.
Does your Toronto day tour stop in Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Yes. The posted itinerary lists an hour in town at about 2:00 pm, between the falls and the 3:45 pm departure. That is enough for a walk on the main street, not a winery visit with lunch. The boat ride is an optional paid add-on. See the day tour page or contact form for current details.
