Niagara Falls is simple to see and easy to plan badly. Some visitor accounts we read describe regrets about preparation: getting soaked, queuing at the wrong hour, buying from the wrong seller, or arriving after the last boat. This guide puts the decisions in the order you should make them, shows what a sensible day costs with the arithmetic, and links to the deeper page for each choice. It sits alongside the boat tours guide, the itineraries and the attraction guide.
The order to see things
- FirstSee the falls from the rim, for freeQueen Victoria Park (Canada) or Prospect Point (US). It shows you what the boat will approach, and it costs nothing.
- SecondThe boat, at the first sailing you can makeVisitor accounts agree early is easier. Maid of the Mist opens at 9 am; Niagara City Cruises listed a 9:30 am first sailing at its May opening, so confirm for your date.
- ThirdOne close-up attractionJourney Behind the Falls (Canada) or Cave of the Winds (US). Do it while your clothes dry.
- FourthLunch and a restPlan a dry change for anyone who got soaked.
- FifthA view from above or an indoor attractionSkylon, the SkyWheel, Niagara Takes Flight, the Butterfly Conservatory.
- LastThe lights at duskOn at 6:00 pm Oct 16-31; 4:30 pm from Nov 1; fireworks ended Oct 12 for 2026.
How many hours to allow
These are the operators' own durations. Queue times are not measured by the operators; the one number we have, 40 to 90 minutes of queuing and boarding, comes from a single travel blog about Maid of the Mist and is indicative only; we have none for Niagara City Cruises.
| Item | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Boat ride | About 20 min on the water; allow extra for boarding (one blog figure for Maid of the Mist: 40 to 90 min of queuing and boarding) | Operator FAQs; travel blog for the queue |
| Journey Behind the Falls | About 60 min | Niagara Parks |
| Niagara Takes Flight | About 35 min | Niagara Parks |
| Butterfly Conservatory or Floral Showhouse | About 60 min each | Niagara Parks |
| Power Station + Tunnel | About 2 h | Niagara Parks |
| White Water Walk | About 60 min | Niagara Parks |
| Whirlpool Aero Car | About 45 min | Niagara Parks |
| SkyWheel | 8 to 12 min ride | Clifton Hill |
| Cave of the Winds | Not published | n/a |
| Rim views | As long as you like | Free |
Putting that together: boat plus Journey is roughly 2.5 hours of activity if the blog's 90-minute boat figure applies (90 plus 60 minutes), about 3 hours with walking, and a full day on one side is 6 to 8 hours with lunch. See how long the boat ride is.
The decisions, in order
1. Which side?
The Canadian side has Niagara City Cruises, most of the paid attractions, the lights and the fireworks. The US side has Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds and a mostly free state park. Both boats go to the Horseshoe Falls basin; the Canadian one is operated by Niagara City Cruises and the US one by Maid of the Mist. The full comparison is in Canada vs USA and Maid of the Mist vs Niagara City Cruises. The boat tour chooser takes you through the questions.
2. Which season?
Boats are seasonal. Maid of the Mist opened April 24 and closes November 8, 2026; Niagara City Cruises opened May 1 after ice delayed it. Niagara Falls Tourism rates July to September the busiest season. See best time, October and winter, plus the season checker.
3. How are you getting there?
From Toronto, Union Station is about 131 km (about 1 h 41 m free-flow; allow 2 to 2.5 h on summer Fridays and Sundays). Buffalo is 40 km, plus the border. GO trains run to Niagara Falls on weekends year-round. See getting there and the border guide. If you do not want to drive, our Toronto day tour is one way; the boat is an optional paid add-on.
4. Which boat, and how do you book?
Maid of the Mist: online tickets are emailed vouchers valid any day of the 2026 season; they are exchanged for a boarding ticket at the booth; there are no date or time reservations and boarding is first come, first served. Niagara City Cruises uses timed tickets and its refund terms are strict (see the refund policy page). Buy only from the operator's own site or ticket plaza. See tickets and prices.
5. What do you add?
One close-up attraction is plenty for a first visit. Journey Behind the Falls adds a different view (see the guide); Cave of the Winds is its US equivalent (guide). Check the passes page before you buy several tickets; no 2026 pass includes a boat. For a spare half day, the Niagara-on-the-Lake day trip.
What it costs: a worked budget
Prices below are the 2026 published fares as of October 17, 2026. Niagara City Cruises' price is the "from" adult fare; its child price is C$32.95 (an alternate C$27.95 also appears). Niagara Parks prices are before 13% HST. WEGO fares include tax. The Rapidsview lot (C$10 a day) is seasonal and free with a Falls Pass bought online; confirm it is open.

These are pre-tax sticker prices; the US pages do not say whether sales tax is added. They exclude food, hotels, souvenirs and fuel. If you cross on foot, the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian toll is US$1.00 or C$1.25 per person going into the US. Use the trip cost calculator to change the party size and attractions.
Mistakes to avoid
These come from the visitor-question research behind this site (travel blogs, operator pages and review snippets); frequency is qualitative, not a count.
| Mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Expecting the poncho to keep you dry | The poncho helps, not completely; wear quick-dry layers and non-slip shoes, and bring a dry change. See what to wear. |
| Thinking the boat goes behind the falls | It does not. Journey Behind the Falls is the separate attraction. |
| Thinking an online Maid of the Mist ticket reserves a time | It does not: it is a voucher, boarding is first come, first served. |
| Using old prices from blogs | Many blogs show 2013-2019 prices; Maid of the Mist is US$30.25 adult in 2026. |
| Buying from a reseller | Buy on the operator's domain or at the ticket plaza; reviewers report mark-ups and tickets the operator could not find. |
| Assuming the season is fixed | Ice moves the opening; closing dates are published late. Check the season checker. |
| Arriving at the last hour | The Maid of the Mist ticket office closes 15 minutes before the last departure; in autumn the boat closes at 5 pm or earlier. |
| Assuming you need a passport for the US boat | You do not to board, but you need documents to cross from Canada. See the border guide. |
| Planning fireworks late in the season | The 2026 fireworks ended Oct 12; the 2027 schedule is unpublished. |
| Bringing a stroller to Journey Behind the Falls | Strollers are not permitted. |
| Ignoring parking | Lots 1 and 2 cost $10 to $15; lots fill early on weekends. See parking. |

Frequently asked questions
What should a first-time visitor do at Niagara Falls?
See the falls from the rim first, ride the boat at the first sailing you can make, add one close-up attraction such as Journey Behind the Falls or Cave of the Winds, then stay for the lights. That fits one day on one side of the border.
How many days do you need at Niagara Falls?
One full day covers the falls, a boat and one or two attractions. Two days let you add the other side or Niagara-on-the-Lake. Three days suit families and visitors who want gorge walks and a spare day for rain. See the itineraries page.
How much does a day at Niagara Falls cost?
Two adults on the Canadian side spend about C$224.95 on a boat, Journey Behind the Falls, 13% HST, a WEGO pass and parking, using 2026 published fares. Two adults on the US side spend about US$98.50 on the boat, Cave of the Winds and parking from October 19.
Do I need a passport to ride the boat?
Not to ride Maid of the Mist, which stays on the US side. You need accepted documents to cross the border between Canada and the US. The border guide lists the official sources for your nationality, and the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian toll applies going into the US.
Is the boat tour worth it for a first visit?
Some visitor accounts say yes, with caveats: you will get wet and there can be queues. It is about 20 minutes on the water. If you cannot get wet or the weather is poor, Journey Behind the Falls or the Observation Tower are alternatives.
What is the biggest mistake first-time visitors make?
Regrets that recur in some visitor accounts are getting soaked without a plan, queuing at the busiest hour, buying from resellers, and arriving too late in the day. In autumn, boats stop early: Maid of the Mist closes at 5 pm in October and 4 pm from November 1.
Should I stay on the Canadian or US side?
The Canadian side has more attractions, hotels and the nightly lights; the US side has the State Park, Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds. Many visitors stay in Canada and cross for a day. The Canada vs USA page sets out the trade-offs.
When is the best time to visit?
June and September balance weather and crowds; July and August are busiest according to Niagara Falls Tourism. Boats run roughly from late April or May to early November. After Maid of the Mist closes on November 8, 2026, rely on year-round attractions.
Can I visit without a car?
Yes. GO trains from Toronto run to Niagara Falls on weekends year-round, and WEGO buses connect the attractions (24-hour adult pass C$16). Check the last train home. A guided day tour is another option; ours includes an optional paid boat ride.
