Short answerOur Toronto day tour runs daily all year, so you can visit Niagara Falls from Toronto between December and March. Days are short, it is cold, and no boat is guaranteed: Maid of the Mist closes Nov 8, 2026 and Niagara City Cruises has no winter schedule. Expect a falls-viewing day.

Prices and itinerary as of October 17, 2026. Winter 2026/27 event dates that Niagara Parks has not published are stated as unpublished.

A winter day trip to Niagara Falls from Toronto is a different trip from the summer one. The falls keep flowing and the park stays open, but daylight is short, the boats are mostly or entirely off, and cold is part of the plan. This page covers what our Toronto day tour does from December to March, what is open and closed, how the light and weather change by month, and who is better off waiting for spring. For the Niagara-wide picture, see our Niagara Falls in winter guide.

What a winter day tour covers

The tour is a shared, guided coach day for 10 to 30 passengers. It leaves a downtown Toronto point we confirm at 8:30 am and is listed to return at about 5:30 pm, traffic permitting. We have not published a separate winter itinerary. The listed day is below, with what to expect from the sources we could verify.

Listed timeStopWinter note
8:30 amPickup, downtown TorontoSunrise is between 7:15 am (Feb) and 7:45 am (Jan) on the 15th of each winter month, so you leave in daylight.
10:00 amWhirlpool Rapids and Floral Clock photo stopsShort outdoor stops on the Niagara Parkway. We have not verified what the Floral Clock displays in winter.
11:00 amMaple Leaf Place, maple syrup tastingAn indoor stop; the tasting is complimentary, and an ice wine upgrade is C$17.
11:30 amNiagara Falls: about an hour at Table Rock, then free time at Clifton HillThe core of the day. The falls and Table Rock viewing are outdoors; Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara Takes Flight and the Niagara SkyWheel are year-round attractions nearby.
2:00 pmNiagara-on-the-Lake, about an hourWe have not verified which shops and cafes keep winter hours. Ask us before you book if this stop matters to you.
3:45 pmDepart for TorontoIn December the sun sets at 4:42 pm, so the drive back is mostly in the dark.
5:30 pmDrop-off in TorontoTraffic permitting.

The tour does not include the evening lights. The nightly illumination starts at 4:30 pm in November and December and at 5 pm in January (Niagara Parks 2026 schedule), and the coach is back on the road at 3:45 pm. If seeing the lit falls matters, read the night guide and ask us about a private tour with a later finish.

What is open and closed from December to March

This table covers the attractions that matter for a Toronto day trip. Fares are 2026 published adult fares in Canadian dollars before tax, checked October 17, 2026. Winter hours for several attractions did not load in our research, so treat times as something to confirm.

See the Journey Behind the Falls guide for the add-on that works in every season, and the boat season checker to look up a specific date.

Month by month: temperature, daylight and the 8:30 am to 5:30 pm schedule

The tour is a fixed 9-hour block, so daylight decides how much of it is spent in the light. The table compares the schedule with sunrise and sunset on the 15th of each month. Temperatures are Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981-2010 normals for the Niagara Falls station; sun times are computed (plus or minus 3 minutes). Clocks go forward on Mar 14, 2027, so the March row is on daylight time.

What the table says in plain terms:

  • November to January: the drive back leaves Niagara-on-the-Lake with about an hour of daylight (57 minutes in December), and you reach Toronto after sunset. The time at the falls, 11:30 am to 2:00 pm, is in full daylight in every month.
  • February: the sun sets at 5:45 pm, so the 5:30 pm drop-off is 15 minutes before sunset. February has the second-heaviest snow normal (32.2 cm) and an average low of −6.6 C.
  • March: average high 5.9 C, sunset after 7 pm, and the best daylight of the five months. Snow normal 25.0 cm, so winter conditions are still possible.
  • January is the coldest month: average high −0.4 C, average low −7.8 C, and 47.7 cm of snow on average.

These are 30-year averages for a station, not forecasts, and they do not describe wind at the brink of the falls. We found no source for a wind-chill figure, so we do not give one.

What changes about the itinerary in winter

  • The boat is the big change. From Nov 9 there is no Maid of the Mist, and Niagara City Cruises has not published winter sailings. If the boat is your reason to go, wait for spring or read how the boat add-on works.
  • The add-on that does not depend on the season is Journey Behind the Falls. It adds about an hour to your day (C$33.00 adult, C$21.50 child) and takes you down by elevator to tunnels, portals and an outdoor deck. We recommend a maximum of two add-ons, and in winter one is plenty.
  • Plan your free time around the cold. The hour at Table Rock is outdoors. A sensible split for January is the viewing hour, one indoor stop such as Niagara Takes Flight, and a hot meal.
  • Lunch is not part of the itinerary. Eat during your free time at the falls, as on any other day.
  • We have not published a winter version of the timings. If weather, road conditions or an attraction's hours force a change, we confirm the final plan in our reply to your request.

What to wear and bring

The temperature normals above are the only sourced numbers here. The advice below is general winter practice, not a rule from an operator. See also our what to wear guide, which is written for boat days.

ItemWhy
Insulated, windproof coat and a base layerAverage lows are below freezing from December to March, and the falls area is open and exposed.
Hat, gloves and a scarfYou use your hands for photos; thin liner gloves help with a phone.
Boots with a gripSpray freezes on rails, walls and paths near the falls, and snow is on the ground in many winter weeks. Metal edges and wet stairs are slippery.
A second pair of socks and a small towel or tissuesWet feet make a long day cold.
A charged phone and a power bankCold drains batteries faster, and you will take photos.
Cash or a card for lunch and Clifton HillLunch, drinks and souvenirs are not included in the price.

Roads, the coach and weather

The coach is driven by our operator, so you do not drive or park. That does not remove winter road risk, so here is what the official sources say and what we have not published.

  • Ontario's advice for drivers: the provincial winter driving page tells drivers to check the forecast and to delay trips when conditions look bad, and it recommends four winter tires. It does not say winter tires are required.
  • Live conditions: Ontario 511 shows road conditions, closures and camera views on the provincial highways. The QEW is the main road between Toronto and Niagara Falls, so 511 is the page to check on the morning of your tour.
  • Travel time: Toronto's Union Station is about 131 km from the falls, about 1 h 41 m free-flow by road per our estimate. That excludes snow and traffic, so the 5:30 pm return is the planned time, not a guarantee.
  • What we have not published: a weather-cancellation rule, a minimum-passenger rule and a winter-tire statement. We confirm weather terms in our reply, before you pay. The free-cancellation window is 24 hours before the tour.

One practical point on timing: a 24-hour cancellation window means you decide about a day ahead, when the forecast is firmer than it is a week out. If a storm is forecast, send us a message early rather than at the deadline. For the road options without the tour, see getting to Niagara Falls.

Will the falls be frozen?

Probably not fully, and no operator can promise ice. A CP24 report of Feb 10, 2026 quotes Niagara Parks CEO David Adames saying the park was seeing "the best ice conditions in at least 10 years" that month. The same report says a full stoppage has happened only once, in 1848, when an ice jam blocked the flow. That was a jam of lake ice, not the falls freezing solid. Winter ice is partly limited by the Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom, which has been installed every winter since 1964. A winter with ice mounds and frozen spray is possible, and a mild one is possible too. Our winter guide has the treaty flow minimums and the ice record. Our photography guide covers where to stand.

Who should wait for spring

  • You are travelling mainly for the boat ride. Wait for the 2027 season, which is unpublished. Maid of the Mist opened Apr 24 in 2026 and Niagara City Cruises opened May 1.
  • You want the falls at night, with lights or fireworks. The tour returns about 5:30 pm, and the nightly fireworks series ended on Oct 12, 2026.
  • You cannot manage a day of cold, wet footpaths, snow or ice, or someone in your group is sensitive to cold. Ask us whether a private tour with shorter outdoor time suits you.
  • You need a guaranteed schedule. A winter storm can change road conditions, and we have not published a weather rule.
  • You have a young child who will not tolerate a nine-hour day with a coach ride in the dark.

Who winter suits

  • You want to see the falls without the summer crowds and can accept cold.
  • You do not want to drive on winter roads or find parking at Niagara.
  • You want a planned route with a guide and a maple syrup tasting, and you are comfortable in a group of 10 to 30.
  • You are happy with a falls-viewing and indoor-attraction day, with Journey Behind the Falls as the main add-on.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Toronto to Niagara Falls day tour run in winter?

Yes. Our shared tour runs daily all year, with a 10 to 30 passenger group and an 8:30 am pickup in downtown Toronto. The boat add-on is seasonal, and we confirm whether it is running for your date. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before the tour.

Is there a boat ride on a winter day tour?

Usually not from January to March. Maid of the Mist closes for 2026 on Nov 8. Niagara City Cruises has published no winter schedule and says December sailings depend on weather. Plan a falls-viewing day, and ask us to confirm any boat for your date.

What can I do at Niagara Falls in winter instead of the boat?

Walk Table Rock and Queen Victoria Park to see the falls, then add Journey Behind the Falls (C$33.00 adult, about an hour) or Niagara Takes Flight (C$33.00, about 45 minutes). Both are listed by Niagara Parks as year-round. The SkyWheel and Skylon are also year-round.

How cold is Niagara Falls from December to March?

Environment and Climate Change Canada 1981-2010 normals give average highs of 2.7 C in December, 0.4 below zero in January, 1.3 in February and 5.9 in March, with average lows from 3.5 to 7.8 below zero. January averages 47.7 cm of snow. These are averages, not forecasts.

How early does it get dark on a winter day tour?

On Dec 15 the sun rises at 7:40 am and sets at 4:42 pm (computed). The coach leaves Niagara-on-the-Lake at about 3:45 pm in the listed itinerary, so the drive back is mostly in the dark from November to January, and you reach Toronto about 5:30 pm.

Will I see the falls lit up at night on the day tour?

No. The lights come on at 4:30 pm in November and December and 5 pm in January, and the listed itinerary departs for Toronto at 3:45 pm. For the lit falls, drive yourself or ask us about a private tour with a later finish.

Are the falls frozen in winter?

Not fully. A CP24 report from February 2026 quotes Niagara Parks calling the ice the best in at least 10 years, and says the flow has stopped only once, in 1848, when an ice jam blocked it. Ice is not guaranteed in any winter, so treat it as a bonus. See our winter guide for the ice record.

What should I wear on a winter Niagara Falls day tour?

Wear an insulated, windproof coat, hat, gloves and boots with a grip. Spray freezes on rails and paths near the falls, and snow is common from December to March. Bring a charged phone and a power bank. This is general advice, not an operator rule.

How do snowy roads affect the winter day tour?

Ontario advises drivers to check the forecast and delay trips when conditions look bad, and to use Ontario 511 for road conditions. We have not published a weather rule. We confirm weather terms in our reply before you pay.

Can I cancel if a winter storm is forecast?

Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour. We have not published a separate weather policy, and we confirm weather terms in our reply to your request, before you pay. If a storm is forecast, message us early.

Is the Winter Festival of Lights on the day tour?

No. The festival runs in the evening, and the tour is listed to return to Toronto about 5:30 pm. Niagara Parks had not announced 2026/27 dates as of Oct 17, 2026. The 2025/26 edition ran Nov 15, 2025 to Jan 4, 2026.

Should I wait for spring for a Niagara Falls day trip?

Wait if the boat ride is the main reason, because the boats are mostly closed from November to April. Go in winter if you want smaller crowds, you can handle the cold, and you are happy with a falls-viewing day.

Want the falls without the logistics?
